Custom Orthotics

What are custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are special shoe or heel inserts created from a mold of your feet. You can’t purchase custom orthotics at a shoe shop or athletic store. They’re highly customizable and designed to support your feet and your feet alone.

If you regularly experience foot, knee, or back problems and conservative treatments like ice, rest, and over-the-counter painkillers don’t provide relief, custom orthotics provide an additional, nonsurgical pain management solution.

If I need custom orthotics, will I know it?

Only an experienced podiatrist can determine if you’d benefit from custom orthotics. However, if you regularly experience foot, back, or leg pain, you’re probably a good candidate. At Orthopedic Associates: Foot & Ankle Specialists, the podiatrists regularly prescribe custom orthotics to:

  • Correct foot deformities
  • Provide ankle support
  • Reduce the risk of further injuries

Custom orthotics can also help your foot and ankle function better, so they’re worth looking into, especially if you’ve suffered a fracture or crush injury.

What conditions can custom orthotics treat?

Custom orthotics are incredibly versatile. The team at Orthopedic Associates: Foot & Ankle Specialists uses them to treat a number of common foot and musculoskeletal problems, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Bunions
  • Bursitis
  • Diabetes
  • Flat feet
  • Hammertoes
  • Heel spurs
  • High arches
  • Plantar fasciitis

The team also uses custom orthotics to treat foot and ankle injuries.

Are there different types of custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics come in several materials. The two main types of custom orthotics are rigid and accommodative. Rigid orthotics are stiff and made of materials like plastic and carbon fiber. Accommodative orthotics are flexible and made with padded materials. The team also offers ankle-foot orthotics that support your ankle and calf.

What is the process for getting custom orthotics?

If you’re interested in learning more about custom orthotics, make an appointment at Orthopedic Associates: Foot & Ankle Specialists.  Following a physical exam and review of your medical history, your podiatrist writes a prescription and takes custom molds of your feet.

Your podiatrist sends your molds to the Sole Supports lab. The Sole Supports team uses your molds to make a pair of custom orthotics. You return to Orthopedic Associates: Foot & Ankle Specialists 1-2 weeks later to try them on.
